Elite dangerous vs star citizen update#
I believe they are not done adding gameplay features yet either, so it's still a tech demo in that case.Īs for CIG having to go back and update older assets since they were made before certain features were ready, the process of making the assets helped inform the development of the features. Just because it's one star system of many intended systems, or doesn't have all the intended gameplay features yet, doesn't make it a tech demo.Īlso, by your definition, E:D has also been a tech demo, since it too lacked all it's core game mechanics at launch and has slowly been adding them over time. The PU, is an actual build of the game, rather than a collection of assets representing what's in the actual game. The current PU is not a vertical slice, the vertical slice was what was shown of SQ42 a while ago. That said, I've "played" Star Citizen for like 10 hours in the 7 years or so I've owned it? Opposite here, though I've been playing ED for years now (and the FPS sucks) and there's tons of games out there, so I wouldn't say it keeps me "enthralled". I backed both games back then too, got bored of E:D in a few hours, while SC keeps me enthralled regularly. throughout the years despite these being "finished" - because they weren't really, they just intentionally looked it. That's why we got multiple ships redesigns, weapon redesigns, etc. Granted, this is not how CIG is developing the game so it'll probably be a long time.ĬIG's focus from the very start is to get "finished" content (vertical slices) out the door to entice new buyers, even if it means redesigning and redoing all that work later on cause a core aspect of that content/feature/mechanic changed (because it wasn't set by the time the content came out). Once all the core mechanics are in place, even if at an extremely rudimentary level. Star Citizen is the definition of a vertical slice, which is a type of tech demo, for an extremely limited number of specific features while nothing of the vast majority of features it "out" yet.Īt what point exactly would it go from being a tech demo to a game if it's just a tech demo now? What makes SC not a game and just a tech demo? If they don't have it, they don't have it and you can't just take the display.Īll that said though, Elite's FPS gameplay isn't that great. When you're at a store like that (which essentially mimics a faceless retail store) you're not gonna buy the display case gun, you're buying a brand-new gun. There is a game in the first place because the devs didn't spend all their time making buyable granola bars, sodas, a bunch of different brands for the same thing, etc.Īlso, the thing not being in stock in Elite is more realistic.I just want my gun so I can play the game. That's probably why after 8+ years they only really have an unfinished vertical slice of a hypothetical game.Īt the end of the day the Elite approach is better because: Star Citizen is known gor putting tons of effort on super shallow and/or pointless "features" that at the end of the day don't change the experience, while at the same time barely having a game.
